His urban Los Angeles fifth graders call him Rafe, but this teacher changes their lives. He themes his classroom after his three
passions: music, baseball, and Shakespeare. Check out his Hobart Shakespeareans at the link above. His video page shows a 10-year
old who couldn't speak English at the start of the year
reciting a letter from a Civil War soldier to the U.S. Supreme Court. Another
video shows his rock band of 10-yr olds. The piano player had never touched an instrument before Rafe's class. ... and they all do
well on academic standards, too!
It's hard to get ideas on differentiating instruction from reading. It's a lot easier and more interesting to hear from people who have actually done it in a variety of ways. Their stories are passionate, and you can easily relate to their message when they are actually presenting it!
